Sacrament of Reconciliation
23rd March 2025

Well done to the 2nd Class children who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation with pupils from Frenchpark NS. They will receive their First Holy Communion on 17th May in Ballinagare Church. 

Rainforest Theme 
January & February 2025

In January & February we learned about the Rainforest as a whole school theme. In the Middle room we learned about the Rainforests of the world & the climate,  plants and animals of the Rainforest, wrote Animal Research Reports and drew Rainforest animals.

Japan Country Study 
November 2024

For the month of November, pupils in Ms Nolan's room learned all about Japan.  They looked at maps of Japan, created Japanese art and read about Japan. They worked in groups to research different aspects of life in Japan and completed projects. At the end of the topic, each group presented their projects and everyone enjoyed sampling some Japanese food!

Myth and Magic
October 2024

The pupils in the Middle room spent October learning about Autumn and Myth and Magic. They explored some Irish Myths and focused on learning about Rathcroghan and the Cave of the Cats. 4th Class pupils worked with 5th & 6th Class on the Samhain Art project over the course of the month. 

Back to School 
September 2024

All of our pupils have settled back into school this September and have been busy learning about 'Myself & My Local Area'. They have been setting goals for the year ahead, recording their personal timelines, looking at maps of our local area and County Roscommon, learning about their townlands, drawing self-portraits and even creating Name Raps! 

June 2024

The final month of the school year was busy in Ballinagare! We had our Food Dudes week, a river workshop with Martina Butler, our Sports Day and the Ice Cream Challenge!

First Holy Communion 
May 2024

Congratulations to our 2nd Class pupils who received their First Holy Communion on 18th May 2024 in Frenchpark Church. They received the Sacrament along with pupils from Frenchpark NS. Many thanks to the parents from both schools who held a party for the children and their families in Frenchpark hall after the ceremony. Here are the children pictured at their school party the following week! 

First Confessions 
March 2024

Well done to our 2nd Class pupils who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation on 12th March 2024 in Frenchpark Church. They enjoyed a well-earned treat in school the following day! They will receive their First Holy Communion on Saturday 18th May. 

World Book Day 
7th March 2024

We marked World Book Day by having a 'Book Afternoon' - the children spent time reading in the Library, designed bunting of their favourite books and created posters for books they'd like to read. Each child received a book token to spend on a new book. 

Well done Leon!

Well done to Leon in 4th Class, who won the B1 31KG Weight title at the Roscommon Boxing Championships. Leon is very dedicated to his sport and trained hard to achieve his medals. We are all very proud of him!

Happy New Year!

On our first day back to school in January, the children thought about and recorded their New Year's Resolutions. They created some Firework Art that week also.

December 2023

We had a very busy month in December! We practiced and performed 'Elves on Strike' for our first Christmas show in over 4 years. The children really enjoyed performing in front of their families and it was a very successful night. 

We learned lots about Christmas and we made Christmas cards for friends and family. Mr. Kelly's friend Birdy came to visit us before the holidays to cause some trouble too!

National Tree Day 

SPAR National Tree Day took place on 5th October 2023, in partnership with The Tree Council of Ireland. To mark the day, pupils from the Middle room learned about Native Irish trees and completed a collaborative colouring project, which is now on display in our corridor.

Water Theme

After the Easter break, pupils in the Middle room engaged with the Water theme. They worked collaboratively to build boats and tested if they would float in water, painted watercolour pictures, learned about Christopher Columbus and wrote messages o in a bottle!

First Confessions 
March 2023

Well done to our 2nd Class pupils who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation on 28th March 2023. They enjoyed a well-earned treat in school the following day! They will receive their First Holy Communion on Saturday 13th May.

France
January 2023

For the month of January, our class learned all about France. We learned about the cities, rivers, mountains and climate of France. We focused on the city of Paris and it's architecture and we even constructed our own Lourve pyramids! Each class worked in pairs to create oral reports on different aspects of French life - Culture, Music, Travel, the Channel Tunnel, Sport, Climate, Food and they presented them at the end of the month at a special 'French Celebration' featuring a French food feast!

Maths Trail

Today we followed a Maths Trail around the school, using our Maths in the school environment to solve problems an answer computation questions.

Finding the Age of a Tree

You measure the girth of a tree, a metre from the ground. Divide your answer by 2.5 and this will tell you how old the tree is. A tree grows 2.5 cm per year!

The School Garden

This week at school we weeded the flowerbeds in the garden. We also planted some flowers and vegetables. We planted lupins and marigolds as well as cabbage, brocolli and cauliflower.

The Earth Charter

This term, as part of our Green Schools Global Citizenship Flag, we have been learning about  the Earth Charter. This is a set of principles that seeks to define and "establish a sound ethical foundation for the emerging global society". The Earth Charter has eight fundamental principles: life, interconnectedness, family, the past, Earth, peace, love and the future.

Saint Patrick's Day Celebrations

We made rice krispie buns using white chocolate and green food dye as part of our Saint Patrick's Day celebrations!

The Sacrament of Reconciliation

The children from second class received the Sacrament of Reconciliation on March 9th. Thank you to Sister Elizabeth who prepared the children so well for their special day.

Daffodils

This week in Art class Brenda taught the children how to make daffodils. The children thoroughly enjoyed making the daffodils, which we placed in vases on the windows. They have brightened up our classroom, giving it a real Spring feel!!

Gaeilge Drama

This week the children in third and fourth class performed a Gaeilge drama based on a visit to the bialann/restaurant. The children in second class performed a drama based on preparing an bricfeasta/breakfast. The children enjoyed learning Gaeilge in this way, as well as performing the drama.

St Brigid's Crosses

On February 1st, having learned about Saint Brigid's life, we made Saint Brigid's crosses to bring home to our families. Sr Elizabeth showed us how to make the traditional Roscommon cross.

Newton's Reverse Rainbow

This month in Science we have been learning about light. We made a reverse rainbow to show that white light is made up of many colours.

Our Projects

This week, January 24th to 28th the children worked on projects for homework. The children chose a topic to research that was of interest to them. The topics included The British Empire, The Romans, The Egyptians, Horses, Snakes, Dogs, Pokemon, Music Genres, Bears, Australia, Breeds of Cattle, Trains, Sharks, Cheetahs, World War Two, Boxers, Scorpions and Wolves. Over the following week the children took turns to present their work to the class. The children worked really hard on the projects and we all learned a huge amount from each other!

The Monasteries

We are learning about the monasteries that gave Ireland the name of The Land of Saints and Scholars. We built replicas of the monasteries in art class.

Miss Cummins

Miss Cummins has been teaching our class since mid October. She has taught us English, Gaeilge, Maths, Drama, PE, SPHE, Religion, Music and Art. We have thoroughly enjoyed having Miss Cummins as our teacher and we will miss her when she leaves.

Michael Bell's Visit 

November 2nd

Michael Bell visited the school as part of the  Heritage in Schools Programme. He worked in each classroom differentiating his work for each group. Michael talked with the children about the changes in our environment as we move from Autumn to Winter. Michael discussed the trees on the school grounds and the school garden, explaining its importance for insects and bees. He led the children on a mini-beast hunt, using pooters to collect the mini-beasts. Having named the mini-beasts the children placed them safely back where they found them.

Science and Maths Week 2021

The children attended online webinars on the Science of Chocolate, The Lifecycle of Bats and 'Think Before You Flush'. The children took part in Science experiments from home, following Lesson Plans that were placed on SeeSaw.

Ancient Egypt

2nd, 3rd and 4th Class have been learning about Ancient Egypt. The learned about the Geography of Egypt, Pharaohs, Egyptian Gods and Godesses, the Pyramids and Egyptian traditions. 3rd and 4th class completed some fantastic mini-projects on the topic. The children painted beautiful Egyptian Masks in Art, fit for a Pharaoh!

Local History - 2nd Class

During the months of March 2nd Class children learned all about their Local History with Mrs. Madigan. They learned about the O'Conor family, Rathcroghan, Padraig O'Caoimh and Douglas Hyde. They worked in groups to write up and illustrate their projects, which are now on display in the corridor - well done 2nd Class!

Mother's Day

2nd, 3rd and 4th Class children were very busy in the printing press this week! They created some beautiful Mother's Day cards for the Mothers and Grandmothers in their lives.

Food Glorious Food

We have been busy learning all about food as part of our topic 'Food Glorious Food'. We learned about the Food Pyramid, Healthy Eating, Foods around the world, Bia in Gaeilge, Food and Farming in the past, the Digestive System and Teeth, drawing fruit in Art and even composing food raps in Music!

As part of our learning, we took a trip to 'An Chistin' at The Hub, Castlerea. An Chistin is a state-of-the-art training and community kitchen which offers a range of courses and services to the food and hospitality sector. We were given a tour of the facilities where Kathy explained what happens in each area of the training kitchen. Then we decorated some cupcakes the cookery students had baked for us at the cupcake decorating stations, which was great fun! A big thank you to Kathy, Cathy and all the staff and students at An Chistin for a really enjoyable afternoon.

October 2019

Storytelling at Castlerea Library

On 22nd October, 3rd and 4th class visited Castlerea for a storytelling activity. They were joined by pupils from St. Paul's NS and Fairymount NS. The children were divided into 4 groups and Graham helped them all to build a fantasy story together. The children really enjoyed the activity. They also found time to do some reading before heading back to school.

September 2019

Trip to Tibohine Airfield

1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Class visited the Airfield in Tibohine. The owner, James Morrisroe, showed the children around the Airfield and he showed them the hangar and his two small planes. They even got to see the aeroplane fly. They also saw two more hangars with lots of small planes inside. The children met Roy Baker the Gadget guy, who showed them his plane. Everyone got to have a sit inside it and look at the buttons and he showed them how to fly a plane. Everyone really enjoyed the trip and it showed us how lucky we are to have such a fantastic facility so close to our school.
