Maths and Science Weeks 2021
We began Maths Week by looking at a powerpoint called 'Using My Maths Eyes'. This linked various strands of the Curriculum together. We did one activity each day based on the 'Climate Action' poster which was sent to the schools. This linked climate change and energy consumption in our homes and school to Maths problem solving. We also did loop games, riddle cards, Brain snack and problem solving puzzles. We ended the week with Halloween games and puzzles.
Science Week activities included webinars, interactive quizzes and practical experiments. We watched the 'Future Island' programmes on RTE selecting one episode for class viewing and discussion. The show included lots of aspects of Science, including fossil fuels, weather, sustainability, food waste, marine biology, physics and biology. We explored the links between Science and music. We examined how the sound of music can alter our heartbeat or cause goosebumps. We discussed the benefits of music therapy.

Earth Day 2021
To celebrate Earth Day 2021, 5th and 6th Class pupils took part in 'Cool Fossils and Hot (Climate) Facts', an online event by the National Museum of Ireland – Natural History and the Rediscovery Centre. They learned about some cool fossils from Ice Age Ireland, including woolly mammoth, spotted hyena, giant deer, brown bear and grey wolves. Then they watched science experiments to explain how CO2 causes global warming. The children then completed activities based on what they had seen during the show.

Our Trip to Elphin Community College
For Science week we did experiments in school. We also were invited to do two experiments in Elphin Community College. The principal of Elphin Community College kindly invited us into their science lab to do two experiments. We learnt how one colour wouldn’t mix with another colour by two acids making a chemical reaction to the two colours. We did another experiment. This experiment showed us how water vinegar and pieces of copper will react if we put fire into the glass and it made a loud popping noise. We really had fun. We even saw some of our past pupils from this school. We really would like to thank the science teacher and the principal for letting us come to Elphin Community College.

Trip to Knock Airport
5th and 6th went to Knock airport on the 17/10/2019. We learned a lot about planes while we were there. We were told about how Pope John Paul II was welcomed to the airport when he visited in 1979. He signed a Mayo jersey there which is now hung there in Knock airport.
We learned that over 10 million people have flown from Knock airport. We saw a person in a wheelchair getting lifted up in a special lift to get on the plane.
