CSL Leadership Cluster & Thematic Teaching

We work with other schools in the area as part of a CSL Leadership Cluster. Last year and this year we will be working with Fairymount NS, Frenchpark NS, the preschool group Frenchpark & Districts Childcare CLG and St. Nathy’s College in Ballaghaderreen.

When we went to Fairymount NS we did a quiz on space. We also found out about a new app called Kahoot.

We went to St. Nathy’s College a number of times last year, once for every school topic we did.

First we went to their Science Fest and we looked at all of their projects. Then when we were doing our building topic we went to their design room and learnt how to design a house on the computer. Then when we were on our last topic, Water, we went to their science lab and learnt all about the plastic in the ocean.

Before the school year started all the staff from all the schools met up together for a meeting to decide the topics for this school year. The topics are 1. Travel and Transport, 2. Food Glorious Food and .3 Sport and Leisure.

The teachers also train together, share resources and think of new ideas for the different topics. They also have a WhatsApp group so they can send pictures and ideas to each other.

Travel and Transport

Our theme this month is Travel and Transport.
We have done lots of learning about Travel and Transport. We learned about Henry Ford and how he invented the Ford car.
We also learned about Leonardo Da Vinci and how he invented the plane. He also designed submarines, parachutes and even bicycle chains.
In Science we learned with Ms Nolan how a car works and how it moves. We designed a car and made them out of cardboard and toilet roll holders and more.
The Junior room brought in toys like cars, trucks and all sorts of transport. They also learned songs and wrote stories and made all sorts of types of transports.
Junior infants and Senior infants went to the train station in Castlerea. 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Class visited the Airstrip in Tibohine. 5th and 6th Class visited Knock Airport. Everyone was lucky enough to go on a trip during this theme.

Trip to Knock Airport

5th and 6th went to Knock airport on the 17/10/2019. We learned a lot about planes while we were there. We were told about how Pope John Paul II was welcomed to the airport when he visited in 1979. We also saw the Mayo jersey which was signed by Pope Francis on his arrival into Knock last year. It is now hung in Knock airport.
We learned that over 10 million people have flown from Knock airport. We saw a person in a wheelchair getting lifted up in a special lift to get on the plane.
